Core Learning Experiences
HSGC's Core Learning Experiences enable students to become better global citizens. Core Learning opportunities are designed to engage all students and equip them with the basic tools necessary to understand the ideals of HSGC's mission statement. Each grade has a different set of Core Learning experiences available to them. 9th Grade * Orientation and Bridge Program During the Orientation and Bridge Program, incoming 9th grade students go through a week of getting to know all about HSGC. Students take part in academic orientation programs where they learn about the high expectations and academic rigor of the HSGC program. They also meet Global Kids staff and take part in Global Kids organized workshops. Students are immersed in the mission of HSGC and work to complete a group project based on their knowledge of the mission and their ability to apply the ideals of the HSGC mission to improve a community. * 9th Grade Retreat The 9th grade retreat gives students and staff a chance to get off campus and take part in team building and get to know you activities. Both 9th grade students and their teachers are able to begin to build a bond and trust outside of the classroom that can last throughout a students' high school experience. 10th Grade *10th Grade Conference All sophomore students will take part in planning and implementing a campus wide conference on a global issue that they choose. Working with their Global Citizenship Seminar teachers and Global Kids staff, students will research topics, create and facilitate workshops, and organize the logistics for a day long campus wide conference. 11th Grade *Domestic and International Travel During the summer before and after junior year, HSGC students will be eligible to apply to one of our many travel partnerships. Whether through the Experiment in International Living Outbound Ambassador Program, the GK/HSGC Peace Boat program or the ACRES Civil Rights Tour, students will have the chance to win considerable scholarships for educational travel. 12th Grade *Careers in Focus Program During the second semester of senior year, all HSGC students have the opportunity to take part in career readiness programs through the Careers in Focus Program. Students attend Career Panels, Job Shadowing Days and will have the chance to take part in half-day internships to gain real world experience in a field in which they are interested. HSGC students have participated in internships at the International Rescue Committee, Senator Eric Adams District Office, Bank Robber Music, Global Kids Inc and Proskauer Rose Architects among others. |
